Supply-chain planning is a quiet revolution role. The work was always quantitative and judgement-heavy; AI made the quantitative side dramatically faster and elevated the judgement side.

Automation is high and rising. Demand forecasting, inventory optimisation, transport planning, exception monitoring, supplier performance dashboards. By 2026 every Tier-1 logistics platform is AI-augmented.

Augmentation is HIGH. Scenario planning under shock (geopolitics, weather, supplier failure), what-if modelling, sourcing analysis, sustainability optimisation. Planners who used to wait days for an analysis now run twenty in an afternoon.

Resilience is medium and easing. What survives: stakeholder politics, supplier relationships, exception judgement, the call when a port goes down. The risk to the role is the same as financial-analyst — the entry-level pipeline shrinks because the production work is automated. Senior planners with strong relationships and crisis-judgement are doing the best work of their careers. Junior planners running spreadsheets aren't getting hired in 2026 the way they were in 2020.
