AI IMPACT ROLE DOSSIER · PROJECT MANAGER

Moderate pressure on project managers. The shape is what matters.

Automation is rising. Augmentation is high and edging down. Human resilience is edging down. The role isn't going away, but the way it's done is being rewritten.

Project managers are weirdly safe. The job is orchestration, and orchestration is what happens *between* AI tools — not what the AI itself does.

Automation is medium-low and rising. Status reports, weekly updates, meeting summaries, action-item tracking, standard project plans. The PM in 2026 spends a fraction of the time they spent in 2023 generating ceremony artefacts.

Augmentation is high. Risk identification, pattern matching across projects, cross-team coordination at higher cadence. The AI is genuinely a project assistant — not a project manager.

Resilience stays medium-high. Conflict resolution, political navigation, escalation calls, team morale under deadline pressure, the moment of "I'm going to push back on this stakeholder" — none of that is AI work. It's the most human part of the job. The pivot path is out of pure ceremony PM into product management, into delivery leadership, or into chief-of-staff roles. The PM most at risk is the one whose value was "I run the standup" — the standup runs itself now.
