AI IMPACT ROLE DOSSIER · PRIMARY TEACHER

Light pressure on primary teachers — but the long arc is changing.

Automation is edging up. Augmentation is edging up. Human resilience is stable. The role is more sheltered than most — but no role is fully out of the wind.

If you wanted to bet against AI replacing a job, primary teaching is your bet. The role's resilience is HIGH and stays HIGH right through 2030 — and that's not us being soft. It's structural.

Automation has shown up in the helpful places: lesson-plan templates aligned to curriculum, differentiated worksheets, grading objective work. Teachers who used to lose their evenings to that don't lose them anymore. That's a real win — burnout was the actual emergency. AI gave teachers their evenings back.

Augmentation runs alongside. Personalised practice material, parent-comms drafts, admin reporting. Khan Academy's Khanmigo and similar tutors are part of every classroom in 2026. The good teachers integrate them; the rest are quietly told to.

But pastoral care, classroom management, child-development judgement, safeguarding, the moment-by-moment presence of a person who knows your kid — none of that is going anywhere. AI doesn't see the kid pulling at her sleeve. AI doesn't know the family lost a dog last week. AI doesn't read the room. The teacher does. They're not going anywhere.
