AI IMPACT ROLE DOSSIER · ELECTRICIAN
Light pressure on electricians — but the long arc is changing.
Automation is edging up. Augmentation is edging up. Human resilience is stable. The role is more sheltered than most — but no role is fully out of the wind.
If you wanted a role that AI can't replace, electrician sits at the top of the list. Hands, eyes, ladders, regulations, irreducible physicality. The role's not just safe — it's a growth role through 2030.
Automation is low and barely rising. Quoting, scheduling, parts ordering, invoicing — the back-office of a sparkie's business is more digital than ever, and small AI assistants are eating into the admin side. The day's actual work — diagnosing a fault, pulling cable, signing off a board — is fully human.
Augmentation is medium. Code reference, photo-based fault diagnosis, troubleshooting flow assistance from manufacturer manuals. Useful, not transformative.
Resilience stays HIGH and may even rise. The energy transition (solar, batteries, EV charging, heat pumps, building electrification) is creating record demand for licensed electricians faster than apprenticeships can fill it. AI doesn't help close that gap. The risk to the trade is the opposite of "automation" — too few electricians, not too many. The pivot for someone in this trade is up into electrical design, into commissioning, or into the energy-sector adjacent roles where the demand is even higher.
