AI IMPACT ROLE DOSSIER · MUSIC PRODUCER

Heavy pressure ahead for music producers.

How much AI takes over isn't changing much. The big workflow changes are settling down. What only a person can do is shrinking. By 2030, the job will look noticeably different — but it's not going away.

Music production got noisy in 2024-2026. Suno, Udio, Riffusion, Stability Audio — generative music went from gimmick to professional-grade in eighteen months. Stock music libraries cratered. The business changed.

Automation is high and rising. Stock tracks, sync libraries, background music for podcasts and ads, AI-mixed and mastered demos, royalty-free SFX. Most ad agencies use AI music for low-budget work.

Augmentation is HIGH. Stem separation, mixing assistants, mastering, sample design, arrangement scaffolding. Producers who use it well are shipping albums in weeks not months. The artists most pressured are session musicians whose work was "play this part competently." The artists most augmented are the ones with strong creative direction and a hundred good ideas.

Resilience is medium and easing. What survives: artist development, A&R judgement, the producer-artist relationship, the live performance ecosystem, anything where authenticity and authorship are the product. The pivot is up into creative direction, sideways into artist branding, or into adjacent fields (game audio, film score). The boring middle of the production market is the squeeze; the top and bottom are fine.
