AI IMPACT ROLE DOSSIER · COPYWRITER

Heavy pressure ahead for copywriters.

Automation is stable. Augmentation is high and edging down. Human resilience is edging down. By 2030, the role will look noticeably different — but not gone.

If you bill by the word, you have a problem. By 2026 the marginal cost of "good-enough" copy is essentially zero. Product descriptions, SEO body, social post variants, A/B headlines, blog drafts — gone. Most marketing teams shipped 5x more output in 2026 than 2024 with the same headcount.

Automation is HIGH and stays high. The "writer-as-output-machine" model collapsed. Big content factories had to restructure. A lot of mid-career copywriters had a hard year in 2024-2025.

Augmentation is high but easing. The first wave of brand-voice tooling, localisation, long-form research delivered the headline gains; from here, marginal improvement is smaller. The plateau matters — it means the market has roughly settled into "AI-assisted is the default."

What survives: brand voice ownership, high-stakes campaign concepts where craft is the whole point, investigative interviewing for narrative work, founder ghost-writing where trust IS the product. The copywriters winning right now charge by the conviction, not the count. The ones losing are the ones who never built a voice nobody else had.
